Cookie Policy

1. What This Policy Covers

This policy explains what we store on your device when you visit earthbasedinstitute.org (the "Site"). It covers cookies and a few similar tools that work the same way.

Earth-Based Institute ("EBI," "we," "our," "us") runs this Site. Our Privacy Policy explains what we do with personal information once we have it. This page is about the storage itself.

2. What A Cookie Is

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves in your browser. The next time you visit, the site can read it back.

Cookies do simple jobs. They remember that you already answered the cookie banner. They tell us that two page views came from the same person instead of two strangers. They remember which ad or email brought you here.

Two other tools do the same kind of job without being cookies. Both are listed in section 7.

3. Your Choices

You are in control. Here is how to use that control.

  • The cookie banner. The first time you visit, a banner asks what you want to allow. You can accept everything, reject what is not needed, or open the settings and pick one category at a time.
  • Change your mind later. Click "Cookie Preferences" in the footer of any page. The same settings open again. Your new choice replaces the old one.
  • Do Not Sell or Share. There is a link in the footer called "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information." Use it if you are in a state that gives you that right.
  • Global Privacy Control. Some browsers and extensions send a GPC signal on your behalf. We honor it. If your browser sends GPC, we treat it as an opt-out.
  • Your browser settings. Every browser lets you block or delete cookies. Check the Help menu of the browser you use. Blocking everything will break some parts of the Site, like the forms.

4. Cookies We Need To Run The Site

These make the Site work. You cannot turn them off.

  • cookieyes-consent. Remembers your cookie choices so we do not ask again. Set by CookieYes. Lasts about 12 months.
  • _cfuvid. Helps Cloudflare keep your session steady while you move around the Site. Set by Cloudflare. Goes away when you close your browser.

Our forms also use Cloudflare Turnstile. It checks that a person, not a bot, is filling the form. It may store a short-lived token while it runs that check.

5. Cookies That Help Us Learn

These only load if you allow them.

We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people read and which ones they skip. It does not tell us who you are.

  • _ga. Gives your browser a random ID so repeat visits are not counted as new people. Lasts about 13 months.
  • _ga_P9GJ7NPTRR. Tracks the current visit for our Google Analytics property. Lasts about 13 months.

6. Cookies That Help Us Follow Up

Ontraport is the system that sends our email and holds our contact records. Its tracking script sets the cookies below. They let us see which pages you looked at before you asked for a brochure or a guide, so our follow-up makes sense.

Be aware of one thing. This script starts when the page loads, before you answer the cookie banner. Turning categories off in the banner does not stop it. If you want it off, block cookies for this site in your browser settings, or use your browser's private mode.

  • sess_. Ties the pages you view in one sitting into a single visit. Lasts about 13 months.
  • vid. Gives your browser a random visitor ID. Lasts about 13 months.
  • referral_page. Remembers the first page you landed on. Lasts about 13 months.
  • lastvisit. Remembers the date you were last here. Lasts about 13 months.
  • _op_gsid. An ID for your current visit. Lasts about 13 months.
  • _op_gsn. Counts how many visits you have made. Lasts about 13 months.

Most browsers now shorten any cookie longer than 400 days. So "about 13 months" is the real limit even when the cookie asks for more.

7. Two Things We Store That Are Not Cookies

These sit in your browser's local storage. They never travel to another company. Clearing your browsing data removes them.

  • ebi_ft_attr. Remembers the link, ad, or email that first brought you here, so we can tell what is working. We honor it for 30 days.
  • ebi_gw_seen. Remembers what you did with the brochure pop-up, so it stops appearing. If you closed it, we honor that for 90 days. If you filled it in, we keep it until you clear your browsing data.

8. Advertising

We do not run ad pixels on the Site. Meta and Google set no advertising cookies here.

Embedded video is the one exception. If you play a YouTube video on one of our pages, YouTube may set its own advertising cookies. Those load only when you allow the Advertisement category on the banner.

If we start running our own ads again, the same rule applies. Nothing loads until you say yes.

9. Cookies Set By Other Companies

Some of the cookies above belong to companies we hire, not to us. Google, Ontraport, CookieYes, and Cloudflare each handle data under their own terms. We do not control what they do with it.

Some of our pages embed video from YouTube and Vimeo. Those players stay quiet until you press play. Once you do, they set their own cookies to remember playback settings and to measure the video. You can see the full list in the cookie banner settings.

We also link out to our application portal and our community space on Mighty Networks. Those services set their own cookies once you are on them. Their policies apply there, not ours.

10. Changes To This Policy

We update this page when our tools change. When we make a real change, we update the "Last updated" date at the top.

If you want to know what changed, write to us and ask.
